Modeling Descriptions and Photos

Painting and Puttying Continue

Don't forget to paint the thin red stripe. It is much easier to just apply a red stripe decal, but I ended up painting it. I masked it carefully to ensure that there is no paint spill.

There were bit of gap between the wing and the vertical plates that bugged me to death. I used polishing compound(!) as "white putty" to fill the gap. No painting was required and the compound dried hard, but it was very flexible to shape! It worked quite nicely to fill the gap here.

No More Gaps!

The gaps were eliminated using the polishing compound. Who says I have to use what people say. Whatever works, right? ^_^

The Front Wing

The black nose in the real car seemed to be painted with semi-gloss paint, but I am not sure if this is indeed that case. For modeling sake, I think I will clearcoat the nose as the rest of the car will get clearcoat treatment. It might look odd having a dull nose.

This is Ruben's car wearing number 2.

Ruben's Front Wing

I compared the shape of the wing with the reference photo above. I think it is pre---tee close. You will notice that I am building Ruben's car now. Let's just say that I made this decision after watching the Austrian G.P.

Clearcoated Front Wing

The black nose is now complete.

Starting the Rear Wing Conversion

These are the parts that make up the rear wing of F2001. In order to convert the wing to suit Monza G.P., I will reuse part 1 through part 4. That's 80% of recycling. We will throw away the biggest part which is the upper part of the wing. The part looks impressively nice and shows a possibility to convert into something, but I played my cool and declared it as useless for my modeling.

Rear Wing Conversion

Here is the catch... For this conversion, I will be also adding a part from another kit. I found this from F310B kit from Tamiya. It's also used, so I am also recycling on this. I decided to use this part as it provides the proper "low" down force and the shape is almost correct! For those who do not have spare F310B kits laying around their basement, question me. I can share several ideas as what you can do to get the job done.

Rear Wing Conversion

I filled these recessed area with putty as the wing will not fit there...

Correcting the Length

The F310B part is not a perfect replacement. I needed to extend the bottom end by little bit. I decided to reuse the original wing from the Ferrari F1 2001.

Correcting the Length Continues

The Rear Wing Assembly

I spent about 10 minutes sanding and shaping the rear wing parts. Then I began painting the parts as well. I drilled a hole on each side of the wing to make the assembly easier.

The Rear Wing Assembly

The rear wing is now complete.

The Overall Assembly

August - 30, 2004 - It has been very long time since I updated this page... I just wanted to update some pictures as to how the car is coming along...
