Kit Review

Tamiya vs Fujimi

If you were interested in building BMW M cars, you'd probably found out already that there aren't many kits out there to satisfy the hunger. Besides some rare 1/43 metal or resin kits, there are E30 M3 kits from Fujimi, E36 M3 cars from Dragon, and cool M6 models by both Tamiya and Fujimi. I believe there is also a M5 kit by Fujimi, but I have not seen it in person yet.

Fortunately, I was lucky enough acquire both Tamiya's racing version of M635CSi and Fujimi's street version of (it was actually re-badged as Testor kit) M635CSi kit. These kits are not easy to find, but can be bought for around $25 to $30.

The following kit review looks at both Tamiya's racing version and Fujimi's street version of M635CSi.

Tamiya vs Fujimi

The Tamiya kit contains approximately 100 parts and most of the parts are integrated to simplify the assembly. For example, the front strut, suspension, and the brake hub assembly are all molded in one piece to ease the assembly. Fortunately, even though the parts are simplified, thanks to a superb engineering from Tamiya, this kit definitely does not lack details.

On the other hand, Fujimi kit features 200+ parts and they are just as complicate as they can be. Of course, the kit will produce a stunning car. There is even a part for hood frame that supports the hood. This can be quite a challenge for beginners, but with a careful planning, all these parts can definitely enhance the qualify of the model.

Tamiya vs Fujimi

I took couple of pictures to show you that the main body frame is almost identical between Tamiya and Fujimi. This is pretty cool! I give Fujimi a credit for allowing the trunk to open.

Tamiya vs Fujimi

This is a frontal view of the body frame. This is what I was talking about... Tamiya body does not lack details and yet Fujimi kit requires to assemble front grille with multiple parts. It's cool!

Tamiya vs Fujimi

The pictures BBS wheels. Fujimi wheels require adding center caps. Can you see those stud holes on the Fujimi wheels? They are sweet!

Tamiya vs Fujimi

I think Fujimi moldings are slightly better in terms of detail and Krispy Kreme factor!

Tamiya vs Fujimi

Tamiya comes with the tranny already mounted to an engine block, but it still looks good. For those modelers who like to build lots of parts, I am happy to report that the engine build from Fujimi can be a kit itself. The kit even comes with an engine stand just in case if you want to build this curb side and build an engine separately. Isn't this kit just wonderful?

Tamiya vs Fujimi

I don't like to build a car where 80% of the body will be covered by decals... It requires stunning decal job to make the kit look good and it will hide all the hard painting work... Fujimi gives various pin stripes to add realism.

Tamiya

I think Fujimi also has a racing version Gr. A kit for M635CSi. That would be a killer indeed.
